Detox Water: How it works; Hype or Real

(हिंदी में पढ़ें)

The term “Detox Water” sounds very catchy and complete in itself, but its effectiveness is not. Many people promote detox water as a complete package for detoxification of the body. However, so-called detox water has benefits, which depend on the ingredients.

An ideal detox drink should be a mix of safe water, fiber, quality bioavailable protein, grains, low-fat dairy products, starchy & non-starchy vegetables, and essential nutrients. In practice, it is almost impossible to blend all these together in one glass. However, our stomach is designed to carry out this blending process naturally when we eat a balanced diet.

The Institute of Functional Medicine (IFM) suggests a detox-focused food plan based on an individual’s health condition. This plan can be a little complex for a non-medical person to understand, so it’s always as we suggest, that take advice from a professional dietitian.

What is Detoxification?

The detoxification includes a series of biochemical reactions in the body to convert the foreign (often toxic) compounds to non-toxic or less toxic, and more easily excretable forms. These processes are carried out mainly by a healthy gastrointestinal (GI) tract. In short, the GI tract is the body’s natural way of detoxifying itself. For a healthy GI tract, many detox programs in the market that usually focus on three basic steps:

  • Blocking the entry of toxins into the body, such as those found in junk food, drugs, pesticides, environmental pollution, additives, adulterants, cosmetics, etc.
  • Moderate Exercise
  • Eating and drinking quality food recommended by a dietitian.

Natural Detoxification System of the Body

According to Harvard Medical School, the human body already has a well-developed detoxification system that has evolved over centuries. The following parts of the body play key roles:

  • Immune system – Keeps other organs healthy and functioning properly.
  • Kidneys – Act as filters for fluids.
  • Liver – The main filter of the body, producing proteins to digest or neutralize harmful substances.
  • Skin – Serves as the body’s first line of defense.
  • Intestines – Trap parasites and unwanted substances.
  • Respiratory system – Tiny hair in the nose act as filters for dust and larger particles.

Common Myths

  • There is a misconception that lemon water, black tea, green tea, and similar drinks are “detox” beverages. While these drinks are not harmful and may have their own health benefits, they do not directly detoxify the body.
  • According to the NIH, only a few small studies have been conducted on detox diets and beverages. These studies often have limited sample sizes and lack peer review. As of now, there is no solid scientific evidence that detox water directly supports weight loss. On the other hand, regular exercise has been shown to support the body’s detoxification and aid in healthy weight management.
